Motorcycle alarms and theft insurance requirements in Belgium: VV1, VV2, VV3, CJ0, CJ1, CJ2 standards

Your motorcycle insurance may require an approved alarm, a GPS tracker or a mechanical lock to cover theft. This page helps you understand the main standards used by insurance companies and choose the right solution for your motorcycle, scooter, quad or Can-Am.

If your insurer requires a specific anti-theft system, it is important to comply. In case of theft, missing the required equipment may lead to a claim refusal.

Always keep your invoice and, when required, your installation certificate. These documents may be requested after a claim.

Older names may still appear in some contracts. We mention both naming systems here to make interpretation easier: VV1, VV2, VV3, CJ0, CJ1, CJ2 and IM, IA2, AL2, TT, AT.

Anti-theft or post-theft: what is the difference?

There are two main categories of protection:

  • ANTI-THEFT systems: they prevent or complicate theft through engine immobilisation, siren, shock detection, lift detection or towing detection.
  • POST-THEFT systems: they help locate, track or immobilise the vehicle after theft using GPS / GSM technology.

VV1 / IM alarm systems

The VV1 / IM standard refers to a system preventing the engine from starting.

The immobiliser activates automatically after engine shutdown or shortly after the key is removed. It may disable the starter motor, ignition, fuel pump or another essential component.

A single cut-off may be accepted if it is not limited to the starter motor only. The system must not be bypassed by the mechanical part of the key alone.

Example: MAX 3.0 for Keyless motorcycles and scooters.

VV2 / IA2 alarm systems

The VV2 / IA2 standard includes all VV1 / IM requirements, plus a siren and audible or visual alert in case of theft attempt.

This protection reacts to shock, movement, lifting, towing or forced access attempts. Depending on the chosen system, perimeter protection may also be added for a garage, top case, panniers or storage compartment.

Examples: MAX 4.0 or MAX 5.0.

VV3 / AL2 alarm systems

The VV3 / AL2 standard refers to a siren used to complement an existing immobiliser already fitted to the vehicle.

This can be ideal for modern motorcycles already equipped with Keyless or a factory immobiliser. It avoids unnecessary duplication of engine cut-off systems.

TT1 / TT2 or CJ0 systems

The CJ0 / TT1-TT2 standard concerns post-theft tracking systems.

These systems generally use GPS to determine vehicle position and GSM / mobile networks to transmit data.

Example: MAX 4G PatrolSat GPS tracker.

AT2 or CJ1 systems

The CJ1 / AT2 standard concerns systems that prevent the thief from continuing to ride normally.

The principle is to reduce speed significantly while activating external audible or visual warnings. For safety reasons, the vehicle is not stopped abruptly while moving.

TT3 / TT4 or CJ2 systems

The CJ2 / TT3-TT4 standard combines GPS tracking with immobilisation after the engine has stopped completely.

This is not a sudden cut-off while riding. Immobilisation occurs only once the engine has already been switched off.

Example: MAX 4G PatrolSat.

Mechanical locks often required

Many insurance contracts also require an SRA or ART approved mechanical lock, such as a chain or disc lock, in addition to the electronic alarm.

Professional installation and certificate

Some insurance companies require the alarm or tracker to be installed by a professional. TecnoGlobe offers workshop installation with detailed invoice.

This invoice can be used as proof of installation for your insurer. Depending on the case, an installation certificate may also be provided.

FAQ – Motorcycle alarms and insurance

Which alarm does my insurance require?

It depends on your contract. VV1, VV2, VV3, CJ0, CJ1 or CJ2 indicate the required protection level: immobilisation, siren, GPS tracker or immobilisation after engine stop.

Is a GPS tracker mandatory?

Not always. Some theft or fully comprehensive policies may require CJ0 or CJ2 level protection.

Should I keep the installation invoice?

Yes. After a theft claim, your insurer may request proof of purchase and installation.

Can I upgrade a factory Keyless system?

Yes. A system such as MAX 3.0 can complement a factory Keyless / Smart Key motorcycle without adding unnecessary remotes.

My insurer requires professional fitting. What should I do?

TecnoGlobe offers workshop installation with a detailed invoice that can be used as proof of fitting.
