Which alarm systems for motorcycle, scooter and quad are required in Belgium ?
Your insurer may require you to install a security / alarm system on your motorcycle or scooter, especially if your vehicle is insured under an all-risk (theft) policy.
If your insurer demands a specific alarm system, you must comply. Otherwise, if your vehicle is stolen, your insurance company may refuse compensation!
It would be pointless to pay for insurance that does not cover theft of your motorcycle…
In addition, the insurer may also ask you for proof of installation of the anti-theft system after the theft of your vehicle! Always keep the invoice proving that your motorcycle alarm complies with the insurer’s requirements.
What exactly are the insurer’s requirements?
We must distinguish between ANTI-THEFT systems (to prevent theft) and AFTER-THEFT systems (to recover the stolen vehicle).
If an insurer requires one of these ANTI-THEFT systems, you will need to install an alarm system that prevents theft of your motorcycle, scooter, Can-Am or quad.
What are the criteria and what do they mean?
IM systems (VV1 in the old classification)
This system prevents the engine from starting.
The immobilizer is automatically activated after the engine stops or within 10–60 seconds after removing the ignition key.
The immobilization is generally achieved by a combination of two actions preventing start-up: disabling the starter, cutting off the ignition, or cutting off the fuel pump. A single action is tolerated, provided it is not only the starter cut-off.
In all cases, immobilization can only be controlled mechanically by the key.
Example for keyless vehicles compliant with VV1/IM: Homologated alarm for keyless motorcycles.
IA2 systems (VV2 in the old classification)
This system includes all IM (VV1) requirements, plus a siren in addition to the engine cut-offs.
A powerful acoustic and visual signal is triggered as soon as an intrusion, towing attempt, movement, or shock is detected.
Protection works via shock, tilt, or movement detection through a GPS module; perimetric detection can also be added to protect panniers, underseat storage, or top cases.
Examples compliant with VV2/IA2: Homologated alarm with transponder | Homologated alarm.
AL2 systems (VV3 in the old classification)
This system does not prevent the engine from starting.
It only includes the same siren as VV2 and is designed to complement an immobilizer already installed or factory-fitted, upgrading it to an IA2-level system.
For example, it is used on vehicles equipped with an OEM keyless system (VV1/IM). This approach is simpler and less expensive than installing multiple redundant systems that may cause faults or error codes.
TT1 or TT2 systems (CJ0 in the old classification)
This system includes the communication tools necessary to locate a stolen vehicle. It typically uses GPS satellites to determine the vehicle’s position and GSM for data transmission.
Two types exist:
• TT1: arms automatically if the vehicle is moved with the engine off.
• TT2: arms automatically if the engine is started without the correct disarming procedure, or when another system (VV1, VV2, tilt sensor) triggers an alarm.
AT2 systems (CJ1 in the old classification)
This system prevents the thief from continuing to ride the vehicle. The speed is reduced to 10–30 km/h, and an external acoustic and visual warning is activated to discourage further theft.
At no time is the running engine fully immobilized (to protect other road users). Only if the engine has been off for more than 60 seconds will the vehicle be completely immobilized.
Examples compliant with AT2/CJ1: HPS950 / alarm with transponder | Homologated alarm with intrusion detection.
TT3 or TT4 systems (CJ2 in the old classification)
A CJ2 system combines CJ0 and CJ1 functions: location of a stolen vehicle and its immobilization after the engine has completely stopped. It is not a speed reduction; the vehicle is immobilized only once the engine is switched off.
Example compliant with TT3/TT4/CJ2: PatrolSat 4G GPS tracker.
Additional mechanical devices often required by insurers
Many contracts also require a SRA or ART approved mechanical lock (chain, disc lock), in addition to the electronic alarm.

Quick reference for insurance brokers
| Standard | Description | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| VV1 / IM | Immobilizer (ignition/starter/fuel cut). Auto-activated after stop. | Keyless alarm |
| VV2 / IA2 | VV1 + siren + detection (shock, tilt, towing, perimeter). | With transponder | Homologated alarm |
| VV3 / AL2 | Siren only, complements VV1 systems. | — |
| CJ0 / TT1–TT2 | GPS tracker. Arms on movement/start without disarming. | PatrolSat 4G |
| CJ1 / AT2 | Speed reduction (10–30 km/h) + signals. Immobilization after stop >60s. | HPS950 | Intrusion detection alarm |
| CJ2 / TT3–TT4 | GPS + immobilization after full engine stop. | PatrolSat 4G CJ2 |

Supporting documents: invoice & certificate
In case of theft, your insurer may require proof of installation (detailed invoice or certificate). Always keep these documents after installation.
FAQ – Motorcycle alarms & insurance
Which motorcycle alarm is required by my insurance?
It depends on the contract. The terms VV1/VV2/VV3 or CJ0/CJ1/CJ2 indicate the technical level (immobilizer, siren, GPS, immobilization). Choose a homologated model and have it installed by a professional with a certificate.
Is a GPS tracker mandatory?
Some all-risk policies require it (CJ0 or CJ2). The PatrolSat 4G complies with TT3/TT4 (CJ2): GPS location + immobilization after engine stop.
Do I need to keep the installation invoice?
Yes. Insurers often request the invoice and certificate after a claim to confirm compliance.
Can I upgrade a factory keyless system without replacing it?
Yes. Add a homologated keyless solution (VV1) and/or a siren (VV3) to reach VV2 if required.
TecnoGlobe – Installation & certificates
With more than 20 years of experience, TecnoGlobe installs all homologated alarms and GPS trackers, compliant with VV1/VV2/VV3 and CJ0/CJ1/CJ2. Each installation includes an invoice official certificate recognized by insurers, ensuring the validity of your theft coverage.
